Friday Fare: Homemade Butter

This might sound strange but I love, love, love to make homemade butter. I used to make it for Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve dinners. I haven’t made it in a while so….

This is the basic recipe, but you can great creative with this. Add cinnamon into the mixture and watch your family’s expression when they taste this on your homemade bread (did you make that yet???? Click here for the recipe).

Plus, if you have smaller children, they love to take turns shaking the jar. I used to put the milk into two bell jars and have a contests with my children to see whose jar would turn to butter first!

INGREDIENTS

  • Fresh cream (originally I posted milk but it took FOREVER to shake the jar)
  • Salt, optional

Put the whole milk into a glass with a lid tightly secured. Shake the jar for 10-15 minutes or until it turns into butter.  Add salt as desired. Refrigerate.

  1. I didn’t know you can make butter with whole milk. I’ve only seen heavy cream being used and that is expensive. I’m going to have to try this.

  2. That sounds easy enough. No children living with me, so will have to shake the jar myself if I try making this butter. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

    1. It’s actually BALL glass. I called it the wrong name (and corrected it). I like the BALL glasses b/c of the way the lid fits but you can use any container.

  3. Sarah,

I have made butter before. BUT I was only trying to whip cream and didn’t know I had made butter and threw it out. My neighbor was horrified when I told her I did it 2 times and threw both lots out.

Now I am more careful whipping cream. LOL.
