Ausbund Song 56 Verse 2

I love reading the Ausbund, the book of songs that the Amish use when they sing at church. Reading the songs is a lot like reading Proverbs in the Bible…little bits of wisdom that, if we all followed them, could make the world a better place!  I thought I’d start sharing some of my favorite verses with you.

You shall love your neighbor
As yourself in joy and affliction
Sin you shall not practice.
For it is due time
That we begin to do what is right,
Following after Christ Jesus,
Looking to His example.

What I love about this verse is that it is so simple but so true. Don’t most of our problems come about because we are not “loving” our neighbor? It might be someone at work or a person in a store. “Neighbor” is a big word. We get angry at someone for cutting us off while driving. We get annoyed because someone breaks a promise to us. All of these negative emotions are demonstrating that we are not loving our neighbor…not listening to what might be going on in their lives to make them behave this way. And, in fact, that is a sin.

We should all consider the example of Jesus Christ and take care to model His behavior. Wouldn’t the world be a much better place?

On a different note, for those of you who have not heard, The Quilting Bee is now available on Amazon.com, BN.com, and Kobobooks.com. It’s in both eBook and print.

This novella is a continuation of The Tomato Patch, telling the story of Priscilla Smucker who keeps encountering a young Amish woman who bullies her. It’s a wonderful read for all ages, adults and young adults.

Also, it would be a wonderful book for church groups. There are discussion questions in the back of the book for book clubs.

  1. Happy Sunday! We all do need to work harder at loving our neighbors. Love this post on that subject. In fact I enjoy and love everything that you write about.
